Biometric technology company Fingerprint(FPC) unveiled its in-screen fingerprint recognition solution in Sweden on the evening of November 1st Beijing time.The technology can capture and identify a user's fingerprint anywhere on a smartphone's display panel.The destructive in-display technology, based on ultrasonic sensor technology, can penetrate glass up to 2cm thick to obtain fingerprint information. It supports OLED and LCD displays, and the FPC has several patents.

New in-screen fingerprint technology can identify fingerprints anywhere on the display

According to FPC, which started working on in-screen fingerprint sensing in late 2016, all technology development projects involve a number of challenges, such as achieving cost-effective mass production and a fair price level, but most importantly, opportunities.By applying the unique ultrasonic technology developed by FPC, fingerprint recognition will be made more convenient for end users.FPC's technology will allow users to capture fingerprints anywhere on a smartphone's display panel, eliminating the need for physical space in a phone's design by handset manufacturers. This is in contrast to existing under screen fingerprinting technologies, which can only capture fingerprints in specific areas of the display panel.

According to FPC, advantages of its new technology include:

• A clean front appearance design that supports a smartphone (or any other device) for display, and also includes fingerprint recognition to optimise the screen to phone ratio;

• The full screen can be used for fingerprint recognition. There is no need to visually or physically highlight specific areas of the smartphone for fingerprint recognition;

• The technology is capable of capturing fingerprints on different surface materials, such as running on thick glass and metal.It also works when the finger is wet or submerged under water.This technique works well with all different glass thicknesses, even the thickest on the market;

• This unique technology works well on LCD panels as well as OLED panels.

"It's a truly disruptive innovation that allows fingerprint recognition to be done in new ways on many different surfaces."Speaking at the launch event, FPC CEO Christian Fredrikson noted, "I've seen a number of potential applications, but our initial focus is of course on high-end smartphones."The technology has already been successfully prototyped, and several patent applications are currently pending.It will serve as the basis for the development of a new generation of fingerprint recognition products with both existing and new partners in the smartphone value chain.The technology will also coexist and complement existing technologies such as capacitive sensors and iris scanning.

Other market technology updates

FPC's current product line is primarily fingerprint sensors, and with the increasing use of biometric solutions, FPC is also striving to develop different biometric technologies to expand the product line and apply in different market segments such as smart cards, PCS, automobiles, and the Internet of Things (IoT).In 2016, the total revenue reached SEK 6,638 million, with a gross margin of 39%, showing strong growth.At the press conference, FPC also updated on the progress of its other core businesses.

Capacitive Sensors

FPC remains the market leader in the highly competitive capacitive sensor market

Fingerprint sensing is the standard method for biometrics and authentication in a smartphone market of about 1.6 billion units annually (2016).Today, about 60 percent of all smartphones sold are equipped with fingerprint sensors, and the number is steadily increasing.FPC is the market leader in this field, and its capacitive sensors have set the global standard for functionality, security, convenience and quality.Today, sensors can be mounted on the front, back or side of a smartphone and can be adapted to different surface materials, such as spray paint, ceramic or glass.

Payment -- Smart Card

FPC's smart card products have attracted considerable interest from customers

In the card payment market, where the disruption of digital security technology is affecting the entire industry, FPC demonstrates its leading position in the biometrics industry, leveraging its strong market presence in biometrics and authentication.The smart card market is now entering its next phase requiring low-cost and high-volume production, and the company has the advantage of being the only player in the market with extensive sensor manufacturing experience.

Recently, FPC introduced T-Shape modules.It is a single module solution designed for grinding and high volume production.The benefits of the T-module include excellent image quality and optimal biometric performance despite ultra-low power consumption.

Contactless iris

FPC is the leading provider of iris recognition and the preeminent advocate of multiple biometric authentication solutions.

With the increasing use of biometrics solutions, FPC is expanding its portfolio through different biometrics technologies or modes.Currently, FPC is the only provider of multi-biometrics solutions that combine fingerprint with iris in an industry-leading security framework.

The company continues to explore new markets where biometric authentication solutions can be used, such as smart cards, personal computers, automobiles, and IoT.With the acquisition of DeltaID, FPC will be able to expand its customer base and markets.

FPC now has its first dual biometrics since the acquisition of DeltaID, with ActiveIRIS®, a contactless biometrics solution, and FPC1145, a touch sensor, both of which have been confirmed by Japanese smartphone giants to be included in their newly released smartphones."We're excited to see FPC's industry-leading technology feature in this phone."Ted Hansson, Senior Vice President of Mobile at FPC, said," This launch is a great demonstration of our ability to deepen and expand our customer base and product portfolio on top of our robust software.As previously stated, fingerprint and iris recognition are complementary models from a usability perspective.This release is fully in line with FPC's leadership position and ambition in the biometrics multi-authentication mode market."
